One of the first pages of comic art I bought back in 1975. It took me 27 years to track down a copy of the comic--I'd been looking for issue 14, as the issue number is cut off on the original. Marc Svensson and Steve Cohen finally set me straight--they both nailed the issue number by sight and from memory! |
I've always wanted to own a complete story. These 11 pages, acquired in a trade with Alan Bahr, were my first. I'd been told Kane did his thumb nails full-size, but didn't know how impactful they'd be until I saw these pages. |
Interesting that Kane filled in the credits on this splash page. Even more interesting is that he listed Wally Wood as the story's inker, but Woody didn't ink the printed version. According to Kenneth Landgraf, Kane's assistant in the 70s, "Kane had hired Wood to ink the job. As was Wood's custom he outlined the job and started inking in all the black areas, but then he had a falling out with Gil over money owed to him and stopped inking the job." |

From these pencil sketches you can get a sense of how Kane built his figures. |
It's also easy to see why John Buscema joked about all of Kane's figures looking like those artist's mannequins. |
