Gertie The Dinosaur, released in 1914, is perhaps the most influencial animated film of all time. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this Gertie panel (McCay drew on rice paper that was glued to boards with registration marks on them, so these Gertie pieces aren't called cels) in Joe Mannarino's portfolio at S.D. 2004, and I still can't believe my good fortune in scoring it. I have no idea where or when this was published--looks like it has something to do with pre-WW I events to me--but I love everything about this. The line work, the figures, the ropes, the hand drawn black border.... |
