Eric Powell is brilliant. His dialog is sharp, witty, and weird; his art a cross between Kirby and Eisner. He won two Eisner awards at Comic-Con 2005, where I picked up this, my first Goon page. In speaking with him during preview night, Powell explained he's self-taught and constantly experimenting with his technique. I love the mixture of pen and ink, ink wash, and pencil on this page, but what really drew me to it was the robots crashing through the buildings and the closeup of Goon, not to mention the dialog in the last panel. |
